I am a composer, pianist, music scholar, and computer scientist currently pursuing a PhD in music composition at the CUNY graduate center. My academic background is rather atypical for a composer: before my time at CUNY I studied both theoretical computer science and music composition at Stanford University where I conducted research on computer-assisted orchestration and algorithmic fairness. I am also interested in critical theory and postcolonial/decolonial thought.

My varied interests mean that my practice spans the acoustic, the electroacoustic, and the acousmatic. I explore ways of questioning, unsettling, and destabilizing “universal” aesthetic notions about meaning and perception in experimental art music. I also play with notions of legibility/illegibility by making music that signifies differently to different groups of people.

• how musicians in new music contribute to, negotiate with, and contest the formation of Han identity both within and outside China
